I'll be retiring next week after 29 years in education!

I want to thank you all for the wonderful advice, camaraderie and recipes, etc., over the last 23 years. This listserv is a blessing.

Subject: Re: Help with reading incentive program

Hello, Cassandra.

One powerful way to get students to read is to empower them to see themselves AS readers and help them figure out what kind of books they enjoy reading.

I have heard from several librarians that the "book selection skills" of their students have suffered from years of reading off the AR list. Kids don't know how to find a book for themselves.

I invite you to take a look at abookandahug.com..it's a free resource

developed and maintained by librarians for librarians. Students can take

the Basic or the Advanced Reader Assessment tool and find out what type of reader they are.

They can then search abookandahug.com by reader type.

The idea is to get students into the process of finding a book for themselves by shrinking that ocean of books into a puddle. It's much easier to zero in on a book when you have a segment of the shelves to sort through. Looking through the entire library or bookstore can be overwhelming.

Here are links to the Reader Assessment tools:

Basic: https://abookandahug.com/test/reader-type-basic/

Advanced: https://abookandahug.com/test/reader-type-advanced/

Also, any child is welcome to choose a book from any reader type and often they fall into two types. We encourage children to read books ...period.

The goal is to get them into the process of reading...we do not intend to limit them in any way.

Hope this helps and it's a great tool to use to get them to make a list for SUMMER READING!!!

Barb
