Sorry it took me a while, but I'm finally posting a hit on the pros and
cons of working in the public library vs. elementary school. From the
responses that I got, it seems that neither one is necessarily better than
the other. It just depends on your preferences. Both have pros and cons.
Also, your location can dictate your duties and responsibilities. Every
facility/campus is different. I hope this helps some of you!

*Public Library*

*Elementary Library*

*Pros*

There is more potential to focus on programming and events.

No lesson planning

No strict schedules to follow

Less disciplining since you're not a teacher

Higher pay and the ability to move up the step scale

Schedule: off during the holidays, summers, nights and weekends (great for
people with kids or that like to travel)

Ability to collaborate with teachers and other staff members (this could be
a pro or con for some)

*Cons*

Lower pay than a public school

Schedule: you may have to work nights, weekends, rotating shifts

Some libraries have homeless people that hang out at libraries in order to
use restrooms and have a place to be during the library hours. Some have
said that there could be instances of stalking.

Depending on your position and location, there could be more focus on
paperwork than interacting with patrons.

Unsupervised kids can make a lot of noise and be disruptive

If you're not the head librarian, you many not have very much control over
programming or purchasing.

Depending on your campus, the STAAR (standardized testing) can take away
from library programming

Whether or not you have a good year can sometimes be affected by
administration and their opinion or view on what a librarian does or should
do (if they don’t value what you do, it can be a difficult year or you
could be pulled for non library tasks)

Handling discipline issues

Job security: some districts are getting rid of school librarians due to
budget cuts

Little to no help (some districts do not require library aides)
