Netters,

I am not posting The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo on my YA blog due to adult material and provocative cover, but I feel it has a place in high school collections due to its honest handling of fat shaming, body shaming, bullying, domestic violence and abuse, date rape, and Shumer's chapters on mental illness and gun violence.

The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo

314 pages with notes from Shumer

ISBN: 9781501139888

Amy Shumer-- best known for her stand up act and Emmy award winning show "Inside Amy Shumer" and hit movie "Trainwreck" which she wrote and starred in--takes the country by storm in her over the top "autobiography." Shumer denies this is her autobiography, but it includes her childhood, her parents' divorce, her dad's diagnosis of MS, her early attempts at stand up-- a real insider's view of how new comics have to beg, plead, cajole, borrow, or steal for mic time, her early failed relationships including one that could easily have killed her, and how she became the outspoken female comedian at the top of her game. Her stand up tour was the top comedy tour of 2016.

This is a book that high school girls need. It is a look at how even a strong, intelligent, smart, pretty and now famous woman could fall for a terrible loser of a man. Abusive relationships occur at all socioeconomic levels and happen to even strong women. Shumer questions her younger, weaker self and this is a lesson for today's young girls. Know your worth. Don't let anyone tell you your worth. Stand your ground. Shumer talks to readers as if they are standing in front of her and she is their older, wiser, been-there, done-that friend.

Shumer pulls no punches in the retelling of embarrassing and impolite moments. She lets readers see it all: the ugly hangovers and blackouts, her inner demons and the fight to accept her body and love herself.

Readers will remember the terrible shooting at a movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana on July 23, 2015, that killed two women and injured nine other people, and placed Shumer on a platform to speak about gun violence. The movie was Shumer's "Trainwreck," and the shooter was known to hate women and love Hitler. He had a history of crime, violence and mental illness, yet was still able to legally purchase the gun that killed two strangers. Shumer is quick to note that she is against gun violence, not against the right to own guns.

Love her or hate her, Shumer is funny, compelling, smart, and brutally honest to a fault. Anyone who love Amy Shumer will love her book. She tries to make terrible moments funny--which is what most people do, but she's just better at it!

Highly recommended. I received this book from the publisher.

High school and adult collections. Mature situations and Amy Shumer profanity--it gets salty!
