A very good topic to remember, so thank you Paul for bringing it up.

My understanding was that at the beginning (or certainly before the 2.0
tools), .com and .org were more strictly regulated, and so the distinction
between the two was easier to discern. However, 2.0 tools and the fact that
the TLDs have been opened to create more flexibility and allow more
creativity have also been blurring the lines (see bit.ly, visual.ly, where
.ly does NOT signify it is a Libyan website!).
