Thank you to Seanean Shanahan, teacher librarian in Castle Rock,
Colorado, for involving the English Language Arts teachers at Mesa
Middle School in Banned Books Week. Teachers are wearing "I Read Banned
Books And I Cannot Lie" t-shirts today to spotlight students' freedom to
read.

Brava for your leadership, Seanean.

You can read about Seanean's fine project at:
http://tinyurl.com/bacc092616

If you have a #bannedbooksweek or #bannedwebsitesawareness project to
share and would like me to spotlight it on my blog, please send me your
information by Wednesday, September 28th. I will post again on Thursday.

Wishing the best to every educator who is honoring students' Freedom to
Read this week... and every week.

Sincerely,
Judi

Just a heads up... it seems that Sarah Maas is dancing along the edge of
YA and Adult. Her newest book in the Throne of Glass series has some of
the same issues that her Court of Mist and Fury had (a.k.a. sex scenes)
Such a shame as the series is hugely popular here. It's not limited to
one passage, there are half a dozen or so. I'm going to half to
seriously consider if to shelve this in my library as the passages read
like an adult book.

Dear colleagues,

A Harry Potter fan has just finished reading the H.I.V.E series and
liked it very much. She is almost done with the last book and looking
for another series that is similar. Does anyone have a recommendation

Subject: Classical Mythology and Religious Restrictions

Does anyone have a letter that would address religious concerns some
parents might have regarding Greek Mythology? I would love it if you
could share. I want to honor their values, but I also hope they will
allow their children to learn the material. Ideas?

Subject: Recommendations for author visit in PK-2

I have been informed that we have funding to acquire an author/speaker
to come and talk at our schools this year. I serve two PK-2 schools. I
know some of the more popular ones may be hard to secure this school
year on such short notice, but I want to try and come up with a list of
possibilities.

If you have had someone you recommend, please share their name and
anything else you care to share about their visit.

Some of those I am contemplating are listed below. My concern is that it
may be hard to secure someone this year. These are authors of some
popular series in our libraries..many checked out by both boys and
girls:

Eric Litwin (Pete the Cat)
Jarrett Krososzka (Punk Farm, Lunch Lady, Platypus Squad series) Tedd
Arnold (Fly Guy series)

Thanks for any suggestions,

Subject: TARGET: Video / Digital Media Services

Hello Great Brain,

My IT guy is anticipating the death of the DVD. He wanted me to explore
some of the streaming services available. Thanks in advance for
answering my questions if you have access to a digital media streaming
service --specifically videos and movies.

 1. About what is your cost? per student? per school? district license?
 2. How reliable is the service?
 3. Does your service meet the needs of staff and students, especially
curricular needs?
 4. Advice?

Happy weekend to all of you. I'll post a hit.

Thanks,

Thanks to everyone who sent links. I created a google doc to use with my

Thanks to Danielle Lewis and Jennifer Milne-Carroll for their
suggestions that are listed in my google doc.

Also, thanks to Cheryl Youse for sending me her playlist.
