I'm currently teaching my 4th grade students about book reviews. I am
having them practice writing reviews of picture books in Google Docs to
start (This gives them the practice of review writing and practice in
Google Docs which we will use more later.) I purposely gave some of the
boys princess books. They probably would give a negative review to those
books because they personally did not like them, but if they explain why
they didn't like them others may read the negative review and still choose
to read the book. When writing their reviews I tell them to answer these
questions:
What was your book called?
Who wrote it?
What was the book about?
Did you like it? Why or why not?
How many stars would you give this book? Why?
Who would this book be good for?

I know they won't write every book review answering all of these questions,
but it really makes them think about what they are writing in a review. I
also share good and bad review examples (This book is awesome vs. This book
is about... I liked it because...)

I tell them negative reviews are fine, but tell me why you gave it a
negative review.
