In 2013 three teacher librarians including me created The FIRST Book Club
(so-named because tasks appeared on the first of each month), an online book
club designed to allow students to choose their own reading, explore it
further and connect with other students throughout Australia to discuss what
they had been reading.
Sadly, because of Draconian laws imposed by educational jurisdictions about
using publicly accessible social media students were not allowed to
participate and we had to close it down.
However, I've now revisited the things that we did and proposed and I've put
these together as a page on my 500 Hats blog.

You might like to use the format or the activities to promote reading with
students in your schools, allowing them to choose the book for their
response. It is a response to the pervasive one-size-fits-all model that
does not consider students' individual needs, interests and abilities or
circumstances.
I've added a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-Share Alike licence
so you can change it and use it as required except for commercial purposes.
Thus, even though it is based on an Australian school year and has
Australian content, you can adapt it to suit your needs.
