Hi NCUC-ers,
I would like to stand as a candidate to be a
representative for Europe of the NCUC Executive
Committee.
I have had several times the opportunity to work
on Internet governance issues as a public policy
expert and consumer protection advocate. I have
been active in ICANN-related policy debates since
2001 through my work for various non-profit
organizations, and particularly from the
perspectives of freedom of speech and privacy.
Between 2001 and 2006, when I was the Director of
the International Privacy Project with the
Electronic Privacy Information Center
(http://www.epic.org), a Washington, DC-based
non-profit organization, my main focus was to
advocate strong protections for individual domain
name registrants so that ICANN policies respect
their freedom of expression and privacy. I also
directed the publication of an annual survey of
privacy developments ("Privacy and Human Rights")
between 2003 and 2006, which included Internet
governance and ICANN-related issues across
multiple jurisdictions around the world
(http://preview.tinyurl.com/4zcnd).
As a member of the following associations or
expert groups, I expect from time to time to have
the opportunity to bring forward to them some of
the issues to debate within the NCUC:
* District of Columbia Bar (2002-)
* Asia-Pacific Privacy Charter Council
(international privacy expert group) (2003-)
* International Working Group on Data
Protection in Telecommunications (international
privacy expert group) (2005-)
* UN Internet Governance Forum (IGF) Dynamic Coalition on Privacy (2006-)
* Vaultletsoft, Board of Advisors (cryptography software company) (2006-)
* Grupo de Estudios en Internet Comercio
Electrónico Telecomunicaciones e Informática
(GECTI), Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad de
los Andes (Colombian university expert group)
(2007-)
* IP Justice, Cyberlaw Legal Advisory Board (2007-)
* American Bar Association (Section of
International Law, Young Lawyers' Interest
Network) (2007-)
More information about me can be found in my
online profile and resume/CV, available at
http://www.linkedin.com/in/cedriclaurant.
I am looking forward to any of your questions and
to working with all of you at the NCUC.
Best regards.
Cedric Laurant
