A coalition of companies, including Microsoft, Sun, Nokia, Vodafone and HP, has asked ICANN to approve the creation of a new Internet Top-Level Domain specifically for mobile devices. The group claims that such a TLD would "be a key step in bridging the world of mobility and the internet." ICANN has not approved any new TLDs since November 2000, when it gave its blessing to 7 top-level domains, including .info, .pro and .museum.
