The British Internet Service Providers' Association Council has chosen domain name giant Verisign as its Internet Villain of the year "for their presumption that they own the internet and the domain name system hijacking scandal." The award was in reference to a controversial online redirection scheme under which people who mistyped various .com and .net names were sent to a special section of the Verisign website (rather than an error page) that provided suggestions as to the correct names of desired webpages and included a Verisign Sitefinder search-engine.
