Knitting needles were certainly amongst the ridiculous list of items banned 
at various points during the last decade+ of the war on tourism. There's an 
enthusiastic knitting traveller's blog post here with links to US TSA 
(allowed), Heathrow (debatable, though the UK government website say allowed) 
but also points to a French ban.
