For a long time finding any type of resource and/or document was,  
well, a challenge. A recent resource, one  that has been of great  
help to many is ICANNWIKI - http://www.icannwiki.org

As for encouraging people to get involved, agree with you that great  
deal needs to be done to encourage people to get involved.
