Controversy has arisen over an Internet governance clause that will be considered at an upcoming United Nations-sponsored World Summit on the Information Society. In particular, questions have arisen regarding the extent to which governments should be involved in "the management of things like (Internet protocol) addressing, global domain names (and) privacy," according to ICANN GAC Chairman Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi. The WSIS had already been the subject of fierce debate over its allegedly insufficient attention to human rights issues.
