I would like to announce a Short Course I am teaching at this year's
Pittsburgh Conference in Orlando. Details are given below:
_S/C Title:_ How to Select an ICP-Mass Spectrometer: The Most Important
Analytical Considerations _
S/C #:_ 28
_Date:_ Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010, 1.00-5.00 pm
_Objectives:_ The aim of the Short Course is to provide a basic
understanding of the most important selection criteria for analysts in
the trace metal analytical community who are looking to purchase a new
ICP-MS system - and in particular what instrument features impact
performance and how best to evaluate them.
_Target Audience: _The attendee should preferably have used trace
element techniques, like flame atomic absorption (AA), electrothermal
atomization (ETA) or inductively coupled plasma optical emission
spectrometry (ICP-OES), but also have a basic knowledge of inductively
coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The workshop will also be
extremely useful for existing ICP-MS users, who want to keep up to date
on the latest developments in the technique, particularly with regard to
collision/reaction cell technology.
_Main Topics: _The most common analytical objectives will be discussed
and how they impact the evaluation of ICP-MS equipment and its sampling
accessories. This will be followed by a presentation of the most
important selection criteria and the many decisions that need to be made
in order to compare different commercial designs, in a logical and
systematic manner. The majority of the course will be devoted to an
in-depth technical discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of
different approaches and how they affect instrument performance. In
addition, some non-analytical considerations, like reliability,
usability, routine maintenance and cost of ownership, will be presented.
I would appreciate if you could pass this on to any of your colleagues
who you think might be interested. For more information about the course
and how to register, please visit my website (address below), where you
will also find details about the 2nd Edition of my textbook entitled "
Practical Guide to ICP-MS: A Tutorial for Beginners", which includes a
chapter on the major topics covered in the Short Course. FYI, the cost
of the S/C is currently $215, but will increase to $315 after February 1st.
Thanks for your help in getting the word out.
