I've been following this interesting yet frightening discussion and thought it would be interesting for some of you to explore alternative preparation methods to avoid the use of this unpleasant reagent.
Modern borate fusion methods coupled with the new generation of ICPs can replace many traditional digestion methods without using HF. Borate fusion has the nice property to perform complete digestion of high silica, alumino-silicate and refractory materials within 5 minutes.
I want to be clear that this method may not be suitable to all applications with regards to some particular analytical needs, but still it may be worth to have a look into what can be achieved now with the new borate fusion approach and if it applies to your application.
For those who cannot avoid the use of HF, please play safe.
