currently we are busy searching for a new laser ablation unit which will be connected to an Agilent 7500c ICPMS. Right now we are using an esi 193FX unit in order to ablate geological samples, mainly silicates, sulfides and oxides in thin sections. The craters produced by the esi 193FX are extremely smooth apart from those of quartz and fluorite. Unfortunately our system is slowly but surely approaching the end of its lifetime unless the laser cavity gets refurbished.
Has anyone experience in that kind of 'refurbishing' of a laser-system, how reliable is it and how long will the new laser unit last ?
Alternatively we are interested in buying a new 213 nm laser: whats your experience with the 213nm laser unit ? Does it produce reasonable craters ? There are several providers on the market, whats your experience ?
Thank you very much for your efforts !
