Five civil society groups have issued a joint letter expressing concerning over a proposal (being considered by a committee of the United States House of Representatives) that would essentially increase penalties for knowingly providing incorrect information when registering a domain name, if that person is found to have violated a copyright or trademark. The authors of the letter fear that the proposal "will penalize and potentially jail Americans who seek only to protect their privacy and right to anonymous free speech online."
