According to Wikipedia, Gizmo is proprietary, as well http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gizmo_Project but it seems to use the SIP standard for call negotiation, which is much better than Skype that uses only proprietary protocols. Which Open Standard audio codecs Gizmo uses I cannot tell, the information does not seem readily available. So while Gizmo seems better than Skype in terms of Open Standards compliance, I cannot recommend it, as the software is proprietary. But unlike Skype, using Gizmo might allow me to participate in calls if there is a SIP number I can call from my VOIP system. Wikipedia has a list of VOIP software http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_VoIP_software that might be useful. I'd probably recommend to take a look at http://openwengo.com/ which seems available for multiple platforms, including mobile phones and web browsers and is Free Software using Open Standards all the way.
