Important: Forwarded from Adam Peake. Hi, sorry to bother you -- could you move up the schedule for selecting your delegate to the 2008 NomCom by at least a couple of weeks. Please aim to have the delegate selected by September 16 (you can send the name earlier.) Once we receive the name, ICANN's legal group conducts a quick check to ensure the person meets the basic requirements (I've copied the bylaws about NomCom delegates below). The extra time is important for arranging travel and any visas. For the past 2 years the NomCom has held its first meeting immediately after the ICANN board meeting finishes, i.e. Friday afternoon of the meeting week. For Los Angeles that will be the afternoon of Friday November 2. NomCom delegates are encouraged to participate in the ICANN meeting, get to know what's going on, issues, people, etc. It might be some NomCom delegates first ICANN meeting. For most people this means starting travel around October 26/27. Giving at least a month for ticketing and visas is helpful. NomCom's budget allows for economy class travel, accommodation and expenses are provided. NomCom's website is <http://nomcom.icann.org/> and has information about procedures etc. ICANN bylaws describe the NomCom <http://www.icann.org/general/bylaws.htm#VII> with the key part about selecting delegates as follows: <http://www.icann.org/general/bylaws.htm#VII-4> "Section 4. CRITERIA FOR SELECTION OF NOMINATING COMMITTEE DELEGATES Delegates to the ICANN Nominating Committee shall be: 1. Accomplished persons of integrity, objectivity, and intelligence, with reputations for sound judgment and open minds, and with experience and competence with collegial large group decision-making; 2. Persons with wide contacts, broad experience in the Internet community, and a commitment to the success of ICANN; 3. Persons whom the selecting body is confident will consult widely and accept input in carrying out their responsibilities; 4. Persons who are neutral and objective, without any fixed personal commitments to particular individuals, organizations, or commercial objectives in carrying out their Nominating Committee responsibilities; 5. Persons with an understanding of ICANN's mission and the potential impact of ICANN's activities on the broader Internet community who are willing to serve as volunteers, without compensation other than the reimbursement of certain expenses; and 6. Persons who are able to work and communicate in written and spoken English." (END) In 2008, the NomCom will select: 2 ICANN Directors 1 member of the GNSO Council 1 member of the ccNSO Council 2 members of the ALAC, from the European and North American regions In my experience NomCom's an interesting committee to serve on. In ICANN I think we often tend to focus on our particular part of the organization or even on a specific issue. The NomCom looks at the organization's needs broadly. It's been a good experience, one I can recommend. Kind regards, Adam Adam Peake Associate Chair, ICANN Nominating Committee 2007 No virus found in this incoming message. Checked by AVG Free Edition.
