Fighting Internet Censorship

 Tuesday, July 15 2008

11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Room – TBD

U.S. House of Representatives

As seen in the high-profile lawsuit against Yahoo! for disclosing information that led to the arrest and torture of a Chinese dissident, American internet and technology companies are facing increased pressure from authoritarian countries to share technology needed to censor the internet and to track down users.

The U.S. House of Representatives and the European Parliament are developing legislation to prevent U.S. and European companies like Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft from transferring such technology to repressive governments.

Jules Maaten, a Member of the European Parliament from the Netherlands, is sponsoring the European version of the Global Online Freedom Act that is pending in the U.S. House of Representatives. Mr. Maaten will present his views on the current state of global internet freedom and discuss efforts needed to fight censorship.
