Thanks Carlos, But I can only manage your sphere's time session since I shall be attending below round table various stakeholders organised by http://internews.org to discuss the media regulations at the heart of reporting on Kenya and claims of 'censorship' by legacy media. Alex ---snip-- Where: Hilton Hotel When: Thursday 28 January, 09h00 – 12h30 In publishing the regulations, the government stayed away from the use of the word ‘censorship’, preferring to call the measures a way of protecting the public from what can be at times a media out of control. We hope that the roundtable on Thursday will help us unpack the issues while encouraging discussion on who knows best what way the Kenyan media should go to ensure the public gets the best possible content. The following panelists will lead the discussion: Dr. Bitange Ndemo, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, will put across Government’s position in the new regulations elaborating why it found it necessary to put them in place. A representative of the Media Owners Association of Kenya will share how the regulations are likely to affect operations and the sustenance of media organizations Mr. Macharia Gaitho, the Chairman of Editors Guild, will discuss the editors’ position on the regulations, elaborating how the media’s ability to deliver content fearlessly will be affected. Dr. Levi Obonyo, the Chair of Department of Communications at Daystar University and a member of the Media Council of Kenya, will examine if this a case of censorship vs. regulation, asking what media and government should do for the benefit of the public for whom the content is produced. Henry Maina, the Director of Article 19, will weigh in on the impact on information access, and make comparisons with other media regulations across the world. Alex Gakuru, the Chairman, ICT Consumers Association of Kenya will bring New Media into the equation, showing how censorship becomes obsolete in the age of web-based multi-media. --snap-- On Wed, Jan 27, 2010 at 5:41 PM, Carlos A.
