I would also like to thank Ed Morris for his careful and thoughtful evidence-based reflections on ICANN and its future path. Multistakeholder governance is a prime candidate for the governance hallmark of the 21 Century, much as international and multilateral organizations were in the 20th Century. Such hallmarks don’t replace other forms of governance; they add functionality and richness in changing circumstances. The Internet is central to this evolution and the challenges faced by ICANN are opportunities to get it right and be a leader. This will be tested by ICANN’s ability to propose a viable multistakeholder model for the IANA transition. This will call for greater transparency and accountability, as inputs into a more informed and reasoned dialogue. It would be a tragedy if issues of openness, transparency and accountability ran aground within ICANN because of struggles for positions of advantage within the Internet ecosystem, or within the structure of ICANN itself. ICANN sits on the threshold of probably the greatest governance innovation in the 21st Century. Let us make sure it is up to the task.
