Attached you will find a letter that a number of civil society groups are looking to send Facebook regarding its long-standing and contentious real-name policy. The letter follows on a recent and seminal decision from the hamburg DPA, finding that the policy violated data protection laws.

As a side note, real name policies are a serious problem. Entities like facebook adopt them because they want to be an identity management platform and info-exchange hub for a range of online interactions where it's required a 'real name' even though social networking itself does not. To the extent they are able to become such hubs, a real name policy on a platform like facebook undermines anonymity on the Internet more generally.
