Hello to Each and All,

I am a rank amateur on all internet-related matters, but it seems to me that this whole
Donald Trump discussion is a "tempest in a teapot."

Donald Trump is a bombastic blowhard but that does not mean that he is unelectable.

In 1976, Gerald Ford won the Republican nomination (although no one wanted him - he was
a stand-in for Nixon after he resigned) because EVERYONE agreed that Ronald Reagan
was UNELECTABLE....four years later he was elected President.

If you recall his rhetoric, Reagan was a similar bombastic blowhard, although due to our
increasingly unruly public discourse, Reagan's words sound rather tame now compared
to Trump.

That being said, Donald Trump and his campaign staff need the internet more than you or
I do. There is no way he would shut down the internet even if he could, which I doubt.

Do you think that Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Richard Branson, Bill Gates, and all of the corporations
that rely on the internet are going to let Anyone shut it down...? How did anyone get to Dublin?
A flight was booked online, along with a hotel room, etc....If you shut the internet down, you kill
all commerce in the modern world....

Meanwhile, the internet will rock on....

Thanks for listening,
Patrick Lenihan

I love this, Seun.

To all, a very basic question:
I am wondering what can happen to the world or/and what will other countries need to do if the US shutts down the internet.

Also, who are those countries who host the basic internet infrastructure and who can bring a bit of trouble in a case of shutdown?

I think we have so much tied the internet to services which can just be switched off by a particular govt or individual. Internet is network or networks and that is infrastructure wise.
If access to infrastructure in the USA is shut down or denied access to or if ICANN is shutdown by the USA. It will just be a matter of time for infrastructure in the rest of the world to adapt and continue internetworking.
That said, this is not to underestimate the implications of a possible attempt from the states but it's just to buttress that the Internet has grown and expanded to become un-killable with a kill switch in a country. Not even Trump can trample the internet for so long ;-)
Cheers!
