For academics who are members of NCSG:

This petition expresses opposition to the purge of academics in Turkey following the attempted coup.

I am not asking NCSG as an entity to endorse it, just any individual members who want to. See below

Greetings,

I’m writing you because you previously contacted me in regard to an open letter of support for academics in Turkey. As you probably already know, on Tuesday began a deep and large-scale purge of all academic institutions in Turkey and yesterday the government instituted a travel ban on all academics and declared a three-month state of emergency. These are terrifying times, so I have a few things to ask of you:

(1)  Please sign this open letter (you can add your name by clicking on the link): http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/the-purge-of-academic-institutions-in-Turkey;

(2)  Please share this letter with colleagues everywhere and with media or educational organizations, if you have contacts;

(3)  If you would like to receive updates in the future about actions you can take to support academics and academic institutions in Turkey, please reply to this email with “Email List” in the subject line. The list will only be used to inform you about actions (i.e. letters, press conferences, conferences, protests).

(4)  Also, if you’re an academic in the U.S., there is a letter to U.S. officials here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1GSlYEn-XzHm8nKF_yRdTF__T3EFVk0EAgYzaYTymwUA/edit?usp=sharing  Please share it with other U.S. academics if you can. The letter was initiated by Professors Seyla Benhabib and Joan Scott, and it might be sent as early as tomorrow (Friday, July 22).

Please feel free to email me with information about actions, colleagues in Turkey, etc. The better we’re networked, the more effective we can be in helping our colleagues.

Also, I’m editing a new series for the American Philosophical Association blog: “Dispatches on Turkey.” A description of the series is included in the link, if you know of any potential contributors: http://blog.apaonline.org/2016/05/31/dispatches-on-turkey-academics-and-authoritarianism/

Here are a few articles about the recent tragic developments:

Al Jazeera: http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2016/07/erdogan-declares-state-emergency-turkey-160720203646218.html

Thanks for your support. I know our colleagues in Turkey deeply appreciate it.

Many thanks, Michael.

I’m sending everyone a note asking if you can also share the letter with colleagues, professional organizations, on social media, etc. Whatever works to get the word out.

Thanks again and be well,

Chad
