SUMMARY


This week, step forward on IANA transition as "NTIA today informed ICANN that it intends to allow the IANA functions contract to expire as of October 1" following informations from ICANN that "it has completed or will complete all the necessary tasks called for in the transition proposal by the end of the contract term". On Internet regulation, "The European Commission looks set to tighten rules governing messaging apps like WhatsAPP, Skype and Facebook Messenger as part of a major telecoms industry overhaul due to be announced in September". The EU is looking to exert greater control over online messaging tools such as WhatsApp and Skype.  On surveillance and cybersecurity; a mysterious hacker or hackers going by the name 'The Shadow Brokers' claims to have hacked a group linked to the NSA. On domain name industry, Domain name registry Aflias has written a letter to ICANN asking it to investigate Nu Dot Co’s winning bid for the .web new generic top-level domains (gTLD). As for event, we note the annual meeting of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions in Columbus.
