Dear Judith,

Just to clarify: I didnt state that we shouldn't be talking about wars/conflicts or politics. I just suggested a separation amongst those since the sustainability conversation might be something we might need to present a position soon, depending on how the discussion goes.

At the opportunity, I would also like to express that I am personally upset and uncomfortable by how the ICANN community has been expressing themselves in light of the palestinian/Israel situation versus how much mobilization we have seen in the Ukrainian invasion case. Neither do I agree on the removal of the mural w/ the palestinian flag that was done during ICANN78.

As much as I understand folks that claim that we can be "Neutral" and the technical nature of the discussions we promote within ICANN, I dont really believe our community can remain completely apart from such pressing and relevant issues. But given this is a rather complex and sad conflict I support our leadership suggestion of refraining from putting forward discussions of this nature on the list.

Kind regards,
Bruna

HI Bruna,
I agree with you.  The operational policy issues such as sustainability and travel do need to be separated out from this list.

As July stated, Politics, war/conflicts should not be discussed within ICANN nor should NCSG, NPOC or NCUC be promoting or discussing these.

Best,
Judith

Dear all,

Thanks for the clarification.

My only suggestion would be for us to separate issues like politics or war/conflicts going on in the world from other topics that might be related to discussions being promoted at icann like a more sustainable approach to travel or the virtual x in person and so on.

And in the latter it might be relevant to ask members whether they would like to develop a position on it since these topics might pick up in upcoming debates at ICANN.

Kind Regards,
Bruna

After some discussions during ICANN78, we would like to remind
that while NCSG has clear positions on many issues, there are
others, such as the Israel/Hamas conflict, sustainability and
virtual versus face to face meeting policy as well as sanctions,
where not only there is no official NCSG position, but our members
have strong opposing opinions. With some of these issues we should
probably develop official positions, while others might be outside
or remits, and some are such that it might be impossible to arrive
at a common position.

Wile we are of course encouraging everyone to feel free to express
and support any position they want, we would like to ask you to
make it totally clear that you are speaking in personal capacity
and that your view in no way constitutes an official NCSG/NPOC/NCUC
position.
