 Hi everyone,

Within the Board Governance Committee’s rejection of Reconsideration Request 16-14, released yesterday, is an acknowledgement that ICANN does not regulate content:

“The BGC notes, however, that the Requester ultimately seeks to have ICANN assume greater responsibility of policing purportedly illegal activity on the Internet, and attempts to place the burden on ICANN to regulate content on the Internet. That is not ICANN’s role. If content is to be regulated, that review and enforcement falls to institutions charged with interpreting and enforcing laws and regulations around the world, such as law enforcement (local and national police agencies as well as intergovernmental organizations like Interpol), regulatory agencies, and judicial systems, and not ICANN.”

This is a paragraph we need to save. The recent appointment of ICANN VP Dave Piscitello to the board of directors of the Anti-Phising Working Group (APWG) may be of concern. We need to monitor to ensure that ICANN remains out of content regulation, and that cybersecurity concerns do not override this basic principle.

The full decision in Reconsideration Request 16-14 may be found here:

 Kind Regards,
