This of course has been in the works for some time. Among the issues that had to be sorted were a) timing—had to be before Netmundial, and preferably before Singapore (will affect much of the week’s activity), but there were complications; b) the framing----beginning a dialogue about how to transition, up to ICANN to convene stakeholders globally and build a consensual transition plan, only fixed timeline is that the current IANA functions contract expires 30 September 2015—which leaves wiggle room to deal with the ebb and flow etc.; c) anticipating and prepositioning for the pushback campaign from certain segments US business, which has been underway for sometime and is cloaked as being about ‘top down vs bottom up’ leadership; and d) by extension, the wider and more rabid politicized campaign from the US political right, which will now launch big time. It will be rather interesting to watch Congressional candidates in the November US mid-term figure out what to say about the IANA functions contract.
All of which is why we have Larry and Fiona at the NCUC conference on the 21st and at our Constituency Day on the 25th. Lots to talk about.
