Thanks Avri.
There are two key components of the theory behind ICANN's governance
structure: bottom up and multi-stakeholder. Both are needed for ICANN to
have any legitimacy to claim stewardship of the internet.
Under the leadership of Mr. Chehade bottom up has been disappearing from the
discourse. Robin Gross deserves a ton of thanks from all of us, because
more than any other individual active in this process Robin has constantly
stressed the importance of "bottom up": from NetMundial to ICANN meetings
Robin has been on top of this.
Unfortunately Fadi Chehade has not been listening.
Here is Mr. Chehade on bottom up, in this transcript Avri has kindly brought
to our attention:
" So while I'm happy to give time so that all of us participate fully and
without any complaint that we are trying to, as you said, top-down decide
anything. I mean I don't know how else to do this. Any attempt to do
anything is top-down."
He is correct: he doesn't know how to do this. Which is why the 12% pay
raise and contract extension Mr. Chehade was recently given by the board is
a big mistake. Since Chehade admits he can't do the job, why not find
someone who can?
He just doesn't get it.
He is also under pressure he doesn't seem to be able to handle. . Fadi
mentions letters he's received from Senators Stern and Rubio on the
accountability issues. He will be getting more - I can promise him that.
They will, however, be from real Congressional officials. Senator Stern is a
fictional character played by Gary Shandling in the Marvel Comic movies
(e.g. Captain America). I hope Fadi was misquoted. If he really is getting
letters from cartoon characters we're in a lot worse shape than even I
thought.
Of course, the real problem here is his perception of the problems. In
response to US government pressure Mr. Chehade says "it's extremely
important that we look responsive". Wrong answer. Right answer? Try "it is
extremely important that WE ARE responsive".
Mr. Chehade also seems to believe that 'trust' is a concept that is
commanded rather than earned. His discourse with Keith Drazek is quite sad.
Too many lies on TM50 for me ever to trust this man again.
Yes, we need to work with him where we can, but if there was any question as
to whether Mr. Chehade buys into the same concept of bottom up
multi-stakeholderism most of us do, his remarks in this transcript eliminate
any question: he does not.
Meanwhile, reading this has my blood pressure up. I wonder if Dr. Spock is
available? You, know the doctor with the office next to Senator Stern's?
